2:55 PM ● Assignment 2: The Keitai Phenomenon

Fo this assignment, we had to explore on the different themes and issues revolving around the usage of Keitai - the Japanese term for mobile phones.

The Keitai phenomenon refers to the increasing multiple functionality of handphones. Examples of usage includes photo-taking, listening to music, navigation, emailing and text messaging as well as staying connected with others.

Our assignment requires us to choose a theme and take a series of 4 photos to illustrate this them or idea chosen. After much brainstorming, i chose to depict the idea of sharing.

The series of photographs that I have taken are to illustrate the different forms of sharing made possible through the usage of the Keitai.

The above picture is to illustrate the usage of Keitai to take photos and send them through Bluetooth. As seen between the 3 phones, there is a blue teeth - which literally translates to "bluetooth". I used this literal meaning as this idea has always been shared among my peers. For instance in Mandarin, people would say "蓝牙" which also translates to "blue teeth". 

Oh and by the way, the teeth isn't photoshopped. It's my REAL teeth which i extracted a day before i did the assignment. Perhaps, this is also where i had gotten my inspiration.


This picture is to illustrate the idea of sharing through transferring. As it is rather obvious that transferring requires USB cables, people will associate it with the act of transfer between the phone and the computer.


The idea of this picture is to showcase the fact that people like to take pictures of food using their handphones. As food is a common interest and need shared by people, we tend to like to post pictures of food in our blogs or even social platforms' updates - especially when the food is superb.


Hence, last but not least, people also like to share music through the usage of handphones as well. With the increase in usage of phones that supports data plan and the advent of digital music downloads, people can easily download their favourite music into their phones. After which, they can send it to their friends or offer them to listen to it through the phone as well.
